1. Data Clerk (Community Interviewer)

Candidates appointed for this position will work at Wagai, Siaya County and reports to the study coordinator there.

Job Description

  • Identify and reach out to potential participants for the study.
  • Offer thorough explanations about the study, its aims, procedures, and possible benefits/risks.
  • Facilitate the informed consent process for interested participants.
  • Conduct structured interviews with study participants utilizing standardized questionnaires.
  • Administer spirometry tests to evaluate lung function in participants (training will be provided).
  • Measure and document participants’ height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and other relevant anthropometric data.
  • Accurately input collected data into a tablet computer.

Requirements for Appointment

Candidates applying for the position of Data Clerk (Community Interviewer) must;

  • Possess a KCSE mean grade of D+ or higher or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Have at least one year of experience in data entry/interviewing.
  • Hold a GCP certificate.
  • Be proficient in computer applications.
  • Have experience working in a hospital setting and in the research field.

2. Assistant Principal Research Scientist

The officer will be responsible for spearheading the adaptation of laboratory technologies from the CDC’s Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria, and NOMADs Nanopore Technology group to KEMRI/CGHR. They will collaborate with and be supported by CDC laboratory scientists in Atlanta and Nairobi, as well as other external partners.

Job Description

  • Offering daily guidance in a specialized laboratory or specific field of study.
  • Establishing a particular line of research, including writing grant applications to sustain the specified research projects.
  • Assuming full supervisory responsibility for junior professional and technical staff assigned to his/her research projects.
  • Providing guidance on the training and development of staff and students associated with his/her research projects.
  • Developing research proposals and securing grants in relevant research thematic areas.
  • Implementing laboratory research projects and/or overseeing designated aspects of the work.

Requirements and Specifications

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant work experience.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Biomedical Technology/Sciences, Microbiology, Parasitology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
  • A Doctorate degree in any of the following disciplines: Molecular Biology, Immunology, Population Genetics, Genetic/Genomic Epidemiology, Molecular Epidemiology, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
  • Developed at least twelve (12) proposals, six (6) of which have been funded.
  • Published at least six (6) articles in peer-reviewed journals, with at least three (3) articles as the first or lead author.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with current laboratory methods in molecular biology/immunology related to malaria or other childhood diseases in Kenya or sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical software package, such as STATA, R, SPSS, or SAS.
  • Completed a management course lasting no less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple agencies/partners.

3. Administrative Assistant

This officer shall be operating from Kisumu as administrative assistant.

Job Description

  • Participate in preparing the budget for project supplies, workshops and conferences, study participants’ reimbursements, and transport requests.
  • Record project vehicle mileage, monitor, and update reports on vehicle maintenance.
  • Collaborate with field team leads to request and follow up on the procurement of goods and services through ERP and eRequestor. Ensure goods and services are delivered on time, meet specified standards, and verify invoices against delivered items.
  • Assist in verifying invoices and bills from the field office before payments are made.
  • Regularly update the stock database to reflect both stock-in and stock-out.
  • Coordinate all project supplies and field activities.
  • Ensure the smooth daily operations of the administrative functions of the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Requirements

For appointment candidates applying for this role must have:

  • A diploma in Business Administration, Management, Project Planning, or any other relevant and equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.

4. Assistant Principal Clinical Scientist

The officer is responsible for supervising and coordinating programmatic and scientific activities within the project in Kenya.

This position supports the program’s objectives, promotes collaboration, and ensures the successful implementation of CHAMPS activities.

The officer will act as a primary liaison between the local site and the CHAMPS Program Office at Emory University, as well as with stakeholders and partners.

Job Description

  • Identifying research gaps aligned with the Institute’s research priority areas.
  • Developing research proposals in the relevant research thematic area.
  • Implementing pre-clinical and clinical research projects and/or supervising designated aspects of the work.
  • Conducting medical examinations and writing medical reports.
  • General diagnosis, care, treatment, and provision of specialized clinical care for study participants.
  • Conducting community diagnosis, care, and treatment during Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.
  • Establishing strategic partnerships for research, training, innovations, and technology.
  • Sourcing for grants to fund the approved research protocols.
  • Supervising junior professional and technical staff assigned to his/her pre-clinical and clinical research program.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the implementation of research projects.
  • Writing manuscripts, reports, and translating research findings into lay language.
  • Disseminating and translating research findings for evidence-based policy formulations and implementation.
  • Identifying technology with potential for intellectual property protection.
  • Developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all data collection and processing, as well as for the management and deployment of study drugs.
  • Planning and coordinating meetings for both internal project staff and external collaborators/visitors.
  • Hosting/participating in scheduled conference calls with international study partners.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields: Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Pharmacy, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
  • A Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Clinical Medicine/Surgery/Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Sciences, Public Health, any relevant Social Science, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
  • Developed at least twelve (12) proposals, six (6) of which have been funded.
  • Published at least six (6) articles in peer-reviewed journals, with at least three (3) articles as the first or lead author.
  • Completed a management course lasting no less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of public health experience in managing diseases relevant to child health, including 3 years of experience working with ministries of health in developing countries.
  • At least 3 years of experience conducting public health research as a principal or co-investigator.
  • Strong report and manuscript writing skills, with evidence.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
