Requirements for Calgary Fire Jobs 2024

Education Qualification: Tertiary Institution Certification (Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma) 

Age Limitation: 18 years and above

Eligibility: i.) Canadian Work Permit. ii.) No criminal record in the past three (3) years. iii.) a pardon or record suspension for criminal convictions if any. iv.) a valid Class 5 driver’s license or provincial/territorial equivalent without a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) status and with less than 7 demerit points.

The Recruitment Process

i.) Online Application

Firstly, you will have to process the application by filling the form online before the due date. The application is usually done on the official career portal of Calgary Fire.

Additionally, you are to match the requirements before applying to avoid an unsuccessful application.

ii.) Aptitude Test

On having a successful application, you will be asked to sit for an aptitude test by the National Testing Network. 

Once you have gotten to this stage the details of the test will be disclosed to you by Calgary Fire. Usually, the fee is $55 USD.

iii.) Document Submission

Following the completion of the aptitude test, you will have to submit your documents listed in your application and completed Personal History Statement.

The Recruitment Officer and Polygraph will confirm your documents for authentication purposes.

iv.) Pre-Screen Interview

The Recruitment Officer will get in contact with you, solely for a Pre-Screen Interview to assess your knowledge, fitness, and how prepared you are for the job. 

However, before this happens we advise you to conduct a research on the role which you are applying for in the Calgary Fire Department, this will come in handy.

v.) In-Person Panel Interview

An In-Person Panel Interview will be held between you, the Recruitment Officer, and other involved personnel. 

The answers you provide in the interview must be presented in the STAR (Situation Task Actions Result) format.

vi.) Pre-Employment Polygraph Exams

Following the information you provided in your Personal History Statement, you will be asked in-person to sit for a polygraph exam for authentication. 

Additionally, the fee for this exam usually ranges from $500 and above.

vii.) Physical Ability Test

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) will be conducted to check if you have met the minimum physical fitness level required. Your ability to perform essential tasks at emergency scenes will also be checked.

viii.) Reference Check

As an applicant for the role, you will have to make provisions for three (3) professional references from your past employers; volunteer positions, sports or another professional source. References of yours (personal) from your family and friends will not be accepted.

ix.) Selection Committee

Upon the completion of the application till this point, your file will be forwarded to the Selection Committee to decide if you are indeed fit for the role.

x.) Conditional Job Offer (CJO)

You will receive a Conditional Job Offer (CJO) where you will have to satisfy certain requirements before proceeding to recruit training.
